As time went on throughout the afternoon and evening we saw the effects of earthquake take shape in the form of broken roads, buildings, and people. Other things also started like liquefaction (liquid sand and sediment that rose from the ground and rushed out like a river) all over the city, and a very weird snow. It hadn't really changed temperatures and was about 55 degrees but the mist/drizzle turned into a light snow fall for a bit. Other things happened like buildings started sinking meters into the ground in only a matter of minutes! It didn't help that there were and still are constant aftershocks occurring throughout the Christchurch area.
It was a very long night for me. The aftershocks woke me up from time to time but the real problem was that I could still feel myself shaking ever so slightly. Just enough to feel on edge, its very hard to describe but it was hard to calm down to say the least. That night rescuers were also fortunate to safely find and bring out over 100 people who were previously lost amongst the debris.
Looking ahead, Canterbury has e-mailed us that school is postponed until further notice, whether that's next week, the week after that or next month we have no idea at the moment. They made it clear that they didn't believe that this would be a semester cancelling ordeal - that's a relief for now at least.
